Nina Gates is an American realist painter with an international perspective cultivated by global living and travel. Her work includes landscape, still life, and portraits of people and animals that feel engaging, relaxed, and modern, while using formal nineteenth-century painting techniques. With an eye for beauty and a passion for stories, her work is a nuanced and sophisticated balance of control and spontaneity, subtle tones, and elegantly glazed shifts of color. Areas so precisely drawn they appear photographic ease into others that are gestural and textured, supporting thick impasto that begs to be touched. 

 

She is the author of the soon to be released book, Be An Artist Or Just Live Like One. In her free time she is a sailor, and passionate  equestrian. Her studio assistant is a German Shepherd named Indiana Jones who often sleeps on the job.
